Displaying Process Hierarchy with Process Maps

Process hierarchies are normally best shown with process maps which depict the grouping of processes within a level.

What is the purpose of the process hierarchy?

The process hierarchy is used for structuring the process landscape, normally according to lanes.

Process maps are often used for navigating and are normally made up of various levels. They are used for showing how various processes are grouped and their hierarchy. Hierarchy structure cannot be maintained with only one process map.

If you want to use a process hierarchy, then you need to structure it in Bpanda. To do this, the BPM Manager needs to create the necessary hierarchy elements on various levels in a tree structure.

Model or import a process map into Bpanda for each of the elements you want to visualize. The subordinate levels and assigned processes are simply listed if no process map is created.

Process maps are scalable vector files (SVG). Labeled area elements that are either linked with a sub level or a process in Bpanda are essential for the process map.

The top-most level normally shows the process groups for management, core and support processes. Core processes are also known as value-added processes. They refer to products and services provided by the company that are of customer interest.

Further levels further sub divide process groups until all graphic elements right down to the bottom-most level in a process map are linked with processes. Processes depict concrete flows of a certain area in Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).

The processes' hierarchy is often already managed in the modeling tool using process maps and the layout can be copied or imported.

What do I need to take into consideration for process maps?

Scalable vector graphic files (SVG) are used as process maps. They need to contain area elements which can be linked in Bpanda.

Process maps have identifiers for these area elements. They enable automatic adoption of links with subordinate elements or processes when the process map is updated.

However, please note that groupings change the identifiers. Replacing a group from an area and labeling with an area with integrated text causes e.g. a new identifier to be created and the link is lost. You need to create a new process map if you import again.

How do I handle the area?

You can  expand the area to the width of the window and  restrict it to the page area.

You can expand and collapse sections using the arrow icons.
