Here you pass on responsibility **within** your area of responsibility; switching **to the next** area of responsibility is described in [Handing Over a Step](/en/jobs/taking-a-job/hand-over-step).

## Prerequisites [#prerequisites]

The current step is assigned to you, either personally or via a group or organisational unit.

## Context [#context]

When you create a job, you are initially the person currently responsible for the job automatically. This means that at first only you can carry out the first step.

If you are unable to carry out a step, you can pass on responsibility.

If responsibility is passed on to an area of responsibility (lane) as a whole, any employee in that area of responsibility can take over this job.

Who you can pass responsibility on to depends on the lane:

- If the step is not in a lane, or the lane has no participants: all users, groups and organisational units.
- If it is in a lane: the lane as a whole or individual users, groups and organisational units in it.

Anyone already working on the job appears at the top of the list. Users who only have read rights are not available for selection.

## How to Proceed [#how-to-proceed]

1. To pass on responsibility for the current step, select **Pass on responsibility** in the ⋮ submenu on the right.

The **Pass on responsibility within '\<Area of Responsibility\>'** dialog appears.
2. To pass on responsibility to all colleagues in an area of responsibility, leave the checkbox next to the area of responsibility selected.

   Continue with step 5.
3. To hand over responsibility to one or more employees in the area of responsibility, click **Hand over to specific colleagues/groups/organisational units** in the dialog.

A list of the available options appears.
4. Select the checkbox for every entry to which responsibility for the current step is to be passed on.
5. To confirm your selection for passing on responsibility, click **Hand over**.

The job's step appears in the task and job overviews of the selected colleagues.

The job's checklist then shows you who is responsible for the step that has been handed over and how far they have got.
