The individual work steps of a job can be assigned to an employee or a group by a person responsible for the job. Whoever is assigned a step finds out immediately: as a notification in Bpanda and shortly afterwards by email, see [When you receive which notification](/en/getting-started/notifications/which-notification-when).

## How work steps are assigned [#how-work-steps-are-assigned]

If a work step lies within an area of responsibility (lane), you can only assign it to the participants of that lane: the users, groups and organizational units assigned to the lane, and their members. If no participants are assigned to the lane, everyone is available for selection.

The personal responsibility of employees or groups for a work step is managed on the job page.

The employees currently assigned to a work step of the job are always shown as the persons responsible for the job.

You can assign a work step to one or more users, groups or organizational units, including a mix of them.

Note: To prevent the processing of the job from stalling, for example because the current person responsible is ill, anyone with access to the job can change the person responsible. If no step of the job is assigned to you, the job page shows you the current persons responsible on the right under **Select Next Step**. Next to each one there is **Change Person in Charge**. If the step is assigned to you, you hand it over via ⋮ **Pass on responsibility**.

You can find running jobs you are or were involved in in the main menu under **Jobs**. If such a job now lies with others, it is listed there in the **Jobs from Colleagues** tab. All running jobs of a published process are also shown on the process page in the **Job Analysis** tab under **Jobs in Progress**.

Whoever assigns a work step thereby hands over responsibility for the entire job or for a section. Sections arise from areas of responsibility (lanes) in the process and from exclusive gateways (decisions) and parallel gateways (parallel branches). A section therefore begins with a change of the area of responsibility or after an exclusive or parallel gateway. Parallel sections can have their own end events.

## The three ways [#the-three-ways]

- [Passing on responsibility](/en/jobs/assigning-jobs/pass-on-responsibility) — you hand over your current work step within your own area of responsibility.
- [Changing the person responsible](/en/jobs/assigning-jobs/change-person-responsible) — someone else replaces the current person responsible so that the job keeps running.
- [Distributing the next steps](/en/jobs/assigning-jobs/distribute-next-steps) — after a parallel gateway, each parallel step is given a person responsible.

The change **to the next** area of responsibility is described in [Handing over a work step](/en/jobs/taking-a-job/hand-over-step).
